August is traditionally the busiest month of the year in Torrevieja, with an estimated half a million visitors and residents fighting for space on the beaches, in the supermarkets and for parking!

Murla, a sleepy little village in the northern part of the province of Alicante, will be holding its seventh Arts & Crafts Fair on the weekend of 18 and 19 September.
This year, as a special attraction, Secundino Rodriguez from Toledo, will be setting out a large display of scale models of farm machinery and implements. Also, as in other years, the master chef Daniel Sala will be cooking three typical regional dishes that you can sample at lunch time.

The latest horse to arrive at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC), Rojales, has injuries so shocking that the vet called to treat her said she doubts any other vet has ever seen such a sight.
An horrific injury to the little pony's leg has left a gaping wound, and her shin bone, foot joint, tendons and ligaments are clearly visible.

The two biggest associations of the Civil Guard, the AUGC and the UO, announced last Thursday that they will stage a demonstration on September 7th at the Interior Ministry to demand working conditions equal to those of the National Police.
Among the measures that members of the paramilitary security force are calling for is a “dignified working day,” as well as the “introduction of a much-needed system of health and safety.”

The Velvetones will soon resume practice sessions once more, following their summer break. Wednesday September 8th will see the ladies refreshed and eager to recommence rehearsals at 10am at the Hotel Cabo Cervera, La Mata, Torrevieja.

Crescendo will start rehearsals again for their Autumn and Winter concerts on WED. SEPT 9th at BAR OASIS in TORRETA III from 6-8pm.
As always the Musical Director is CHAS SMITH and choir accompanist is SUE TRICK. New members and visitors are always welcome. Crescendo is a friendly group of approx 60 members which includes several husband and wife couples. There are social events throughout the year including meals and parties.

The Garden Club of Vega Baja will hold its first meeting of the autumn on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 6th from 2-4pm at the Restaurante Los Rosales on the Lemon Tree Road (same venue as before, but different name)
The speaker for the month will be Dennis James talking about the joys and problems of BEEKEEPING.
As always there will be a question and answer time.
Members are invited to bring produce for sale e.g. fruit, veg, preserves etc.

Mar Azul International School had reason to celebrate this week having smashed its previous year's records and surpassing all expectations with some amazing IGCSE results.
The school opened its Secondary Department in 2005, thus 2010 was the first exam year for pupils that had completed all of their Secondary Education at the school.

The Gota Fria, the phenomenon when the heavens open and torrential downpours flood normally dry areas in a matter of minutes, looks set to appear in style this year, and forecasters are predicting that we should be expecting very heavy rain between September 15th and the end of October.
The main ingredients necessary for the “gota fria” to form are: cold air at high altitude (5km above the ground), and warm, damp air on the surface of the earth.

Three youngsters and an adult managed to stop a violent thief from running off last Sunday in Alicante. The robber had tried to grab a lady's bag as she was walking along, at about 7pm in the evening.
The victim fell over in the struggle, banging her head, which left her disorientated. Three youngsters who were walking by at the time, ran to the aid of the lady, then sped after the thief.
They kept shouting “thief, thief (ladron, ladron) as they sprinted along the pavement after the fleeing [...]

It will be held AT TORRE PACHECO THURSDAY 21st OCTOBER in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy appeal. The event is open to men and women, with or without handicap. Meeting points will be either the HOP bar La Zenia at 12.15pm or Torre Pacheco golf course 1.00pm.
Play will begin at approx 1.15pm in groups of 4. Prizes will be given to the group of 4, that takes the least putts on the whole course.
