Fishing with a net has now become a much more common sight on the River Segura but only a year ago it would have been unthinkable. “It makes much more sense” said one fisherman. The fish are easy to spot and a net allows you to simply lift them out.

The Guardia Civil in Alicante have arrested a 19-year-old youth for the alleged abuse and neglect of animals, after finding two horses suffering from multiple ailments including extreme malnutrition and mobility problems.
The animals had lived in a small stable which agents considered totally unacceptable for the use to which it was being put

After confirmation was finally reached between the council and cycling authorities the seventh stage of the 65the edition of the Tour of Spain will pass through Rojales next Friday, 3 September with the first cyclists expected to reach the town by about 2pm.

The Film Office has said that the Province of Alicante will be the setting for the shooting of a new Bruce Willis action movie ‘In the Cold Light of Day' later this year.
They have also loaned a room in the town hall in the Plaza del Carmen top the production company so that they can start their task of casting extras for the new film

Following a marathon day of testimony in Torrevija's Magistrates Court last Thursday the drugs ring known locally as the ‘Clan of Tote', referring to their leader, was finally broken up.
Charged for conspiracy and crimes against public health, the handle that the police seem to put on most drugs related offences, over 16 arrests were made by the Guardia Civil. The accused all testified before the judge at the weekend.

Over 75% of Guardia Civil cells are unfit to hold detainees, a fact acknowledged by the government in a parliamentary answer last week.
This means that agents are often forced to move anyone they arrest to Local Police cells, often situated in other municipalities which can be several miles away.
Even the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) say that over 80 % of their cells in Valencia are unhealthy and are not fit for detainees to be locked inside, often for many hours. A spokesman said [...]

Fund-raisers have collected more than 800 Euros with a charity fun day held in aid of Torrevieja Hospital baby unit. A spokesman for the hospital's maternity department has praised the fund-raisers for their dedication which has raised thousands of Euros for the mother and baby unit.

The attack occurred on August 25th, 1938, in which 19 local people were killed. There is no record of the attack in the municipal archives, but it is a well documented act.

An elderly woman died on Wednesday at the playa de Los Viveros, in Guardamar, after being rescued in waters near the mouth of the River Segura.
The woman was rescued from the water when her body was seen floating face down in an area where bathing is prohibited, 50 meters from the river mouth. Red Cross life guards rescued the lady and tried to revive her before a SAMU ambulance attended, but all attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
